“Let’s raise a toast to saint Joe Strummer.”

Unfortunately, I have a tendency to make posts on here a little too late. This past Sunday was the late Joe Strummer‘s birthday. Had he still been alive today, he would’ve been 59 years old. Though, given my age, it would have been rather unlikely, I wish I could have seen him perform before he died in 2002, even just so that I could say I had seen him. The Clash is one of my favorite bands, and the influence that they and Strummer have had on a lot of the musicians I listen to today has been significant. Therefore, I thought I’d include here two songs from modern-day artists that mention Strummer. The first is the Hold Steady’s “Constructive Summer”, which includes the line in the title of this post. The song includes several references to other artists as well, including Iggy Pop and Dillinger Four, and is just a wonderful tune overall. Also, this particular video is FANTASTIC.

The other video is from one of my favorite bands, the Gaslight Anthem. The song here completely revolves around Strummer and is aptly titled, “I’da Called You Woody, Joe”, a reference to Strummer’s affinity toward Woody Guthrie and desire to go by Woody. The song itself contains many references to “Coma Girl”, a song done by Joe Strummer and the Mescaleros (references to the chain gang, etc). This is probably one of my favorite songs by this band. Enjoy.
